The United States Geological Survey reported a 2.3 magnitude earthquake in East Haddam at about 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20. It shook the ground in Middletown, Cromwell, Glastonbury, and Hartford, the USGS said. A small aftershock followed the tremor.

Several people called 911 in Colchester after hearing a loud boom around the same time. Authorities believe the earthquake caused the sound.

The USGS said earthquakes with a magnitude below 2.5 are unlikely to cause structural damage.

This is the second earthquake to occur in Connecticut this week.

The USGS recorded a 1.3 magnitude quake in North Stamford on Monday, Nov. 18, that could be felt throughout Fairfield County. No damage was reported, but multiple people reported hearing a loud boom that shook their homes at the same time.
